Useful Skills

A very useful skill for everyone is to learn how to be at least partially ambidextrous. This means being able to do tasks with either hand.

I know, you’re saying “I can’t do things with my other hand”. First, don’t say “CAN’T”, that is telling yourself that you could never be able to do the thing so why bother trying.

Say “At the moment I am not able to do things with my other hand.” NOW you are allowing this to change in the future.

No time like the present to start working on the future.

You will find being ambidextrous to be very useful not just when working on machines, you’ll keep finding yourself being able to do some things better with the other hand.

So, how to learn this new skill? Practice, there’s nothing magic about it. If you want to learn to play a sport, you start playing badly but then see improvement. You may get really good, you may only be average. But in any case you are now able to do something you couldn’t before.

Start simple. Find a bolt and nut. Hold the bolt in one hand and screw the nut on and off. Now switch hands. It may feel funny doing it but after you practice a short while it will seem normal.

You are now partially ambidextrous!

Do this with other things. Try cutting a sheet of paper while holding the scissors in the wrong hand.

Try this with other tools you have, can you use a screwdriver with the wrong hand? Sure you can!

After you’ve gotten better at doing things with the wrong hand, try these same things while reaching around something. It should be small enough for you to reach all the way around but not much smaller. Maybe a box? This is something you’ll find yourself doing more than you expect, things like “I need to tighten a screw behind that appliance.”

One more step, do it with your eyes closed. Do NOT use dangerous things, keep it safe.

So, after a little practice you’ll find you can do things you can’t see by reaching around something you can’t move AND you can do it with whichever hand you can get around the blockage.

Go, practice, make it fun! Can your friends do these things with their wrong hand? Can they do them with their eyes closed?

Enjoy life, learn more things and teach others.
